FYI..

..I got curious on the issue, and though IBM's links dead-ended on the tmpnam() 
API, and although it is guaranteed to be unique at the time it returns the 
name, it does not guarantee that another file won't create one with the same 
name before you get there. 

Looks like tmpfile() not only generates the unique name but creates and opens 
the file, which now might be a premature open.. FYI...
