Yeah, you make a good point Rob.  I was thinking along those lines myself
and I'll probably end up doing that.  At the moment I'm just trying to
resolve and outstanding issue so I will try the PTF route first. If that
doesn't do the trick, then I'll have a better case for doing a rewrite on
this.

Cases like this is one reason we've moved away from CPYFRMIMPF and started 
using IFS access directly.  When something does go out of whack, like 
trying to move a 16char into a 15a field, you do not get the granularity 
to resolve the issue.  We used to download the file into Excel and use 
complicated formulas to determine the largest column width, etc.

Actually the IBM utilities are poor performers and you can do faster with 
a roll-your-own.
