Doug, I'm going to guess that it's invalid and FMTDTA's default just changes it into a "C". If he had diags set to output in the "H" spec, it would probably show that. There's no concept of a field in FMTDTA (nee #GSORT!) and the "C"haracter type of request does allow more than one character to be compared, IIRC. -mark Original Message: ----------------- From: Douglas Handy dhandy@xxxxxxxxx Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2006 12:06:40 -0400 To: midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Need help about an OCL Mark, What does the "F" represent? As I recall, it was Field, or at least that is how I would think of it. It basically meant you were comparing the characters (since sort column 8 was C not D for digit or Z for Zone bits etc) in columns 9-16 to those in 17-24. It is not to be confused with a F in column 6, which stood for Force and allowed forcing certain values into the sort fields. This was typically used with multiple select groups, each with different criteria and which needed a different sort priority or sequencing.
