Thanks for the info.  The software is doing the conversion and it's probably a 
well known package, patrick townsend.  Their support folks are excellent.

I believe the file is being sent in binary mode now, as the data is 
still ASCII. In ascii (text) mode the data would have been converted 
properly already. So you are probably left with Scott's solution of 
copying to a file with the desired CCSID for your national language.
