In absolute terms there really is no such thing as variable length records on the System i - unless you mean from tape? A kind of variable length record was introduced to support COBOL users migrating from mainframes many years ago. It is implemented as record consisting of zero to n fixed length fields followed by one (and one only) variable length fields. Such files can be handled just fine by RPG but if the variable portion contains multiple fields, you have to map them via a DS or via pointers or substringing or ...
