1. Sure - why not? You can WebSM in for most operations anyway.
2. Who cares - a KVM will not an HMC damage. If your CE has a problem with
it, I'd probably look at getting a new CE.
3. Depends on the brand of KVM, I'd take WebSM over one of the sol'ns I've
seen before.
4. Depends on the brand of KVM. Some allow for multiple sessions (say 2
people using 2 or 24 boxes) to attached machines, some don't.

Just get a good KVM vendor on the phone and they'll be able to go over the
specifics. The newer HMCs are 100% USB though, so make sure they can handle
that.

The main thing to remember is that HMCs are PCs and xSeries servers with
changed machine types and models. Anything you can generally do for KVM for an
xSeries you can do with these.

Now the questions become:
1 - Do we want to do this at work? We already KVM a bunch of IXS cards, etc
2 - Do CE's get testy if the HMC is in one rack with the i5 and the KVM is in a
rack on the other wall? Do we care?
3 - Having not personally used access to the KVM is it easier to do than
loading the download on each PC required to use the full GUI HMC access?
4 - Can multiple people access the KVM at the same time? Meaning two
concerns:
4a = If the local user is using it, can I access it remotely when called to
see what went wrong on a GO SAVE 21 at the same time? Like I do with Shared
session on the HMC.
4b = If one fellow is using it to handle a Wintel issue can I still access it
remotely to deal with HMC?

Yeah, no tricks were required and no problems have been seen from using a
KVM.

RE: First time buying System i5

(I assume that includes the LCD screen)
If you buy the rack mount (which includes the slim lcd) it is $3800.
If you buy the desktop you can get "#1876 L200P Flat Panel
Monitor(desktop)"
for $1645.

I am guessing I can just get the appliance and use my own keyboard,
mouse
and monitor.
