I got the job done with info from Lukas as well as the Info Center Hardware
(search "9405 Install Disk") which did let me know a normal ipl, followed by
STRSST will allow the configure of the disks.
This i5 Express Edition has 8 slots, but after removing the cover, and pulling the spacers, only the top 4 slots have something to plug into. Assume it takes
another disk controller to get the next 4?
A note the straspbal to balance the drives took perhaps 12 hours.

My next step is to add a gig of memory - and that requires really getting into
the box...

I had to do this exact thing a month ago..

Lukas describes the process very well.

It took me a while to figure out the control panel
lights and buttons to get to manual.

Go to http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/eserver/v1r3s/index.jsp
and search on "Putting physical control panel in manual"

My understanding is that you can install 7 drives
with no additional features.

I "highly" recommend taking off the entire face plate
when doing the actual "plug in" due to the cheesy
"clamps" used during the "lock down".

It will take you longer to install the stupid little
latches than to actually install the drives.

Have an i5 520 Express Edition, came with 2 - 35gb 4326 drives - mirrored. There are 8 drive slots on front of standalone unit, and existing drives in 2nd and 3rd slots (from top).
Adding 2 more 35gb 4326 drives (mirrored).
Do I add them to slots 1 & 4 ?
The Info Center indicates 2 new drives on a mirrored system should come up "mirrored"
so is there any problem if not adjacent slots?
And why would factory ship drives in 2 & 3 and not 1 & 2?
Slots 5 thru 8 are just filler, and nothing to connect drive to behind disk drive handle. I assume this means controller only handles 4 drives and only one available controller.
