They may be a way to use a host file on a network share.  That way when
you are on the network, you have the local IP / Name resolution and off
the network it is not available so you get DNS lookup.  See LMHOST.SAM
in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory

No active directory.  No internal DNS server.  No network people.  Just
a small account with an iSeries running POP/SMTP for email (along with
their distribution application). 

So you're saying there's no quick and dirty solution, other than
configuring an internal DNS server just to server one address - the
"mail.theircompany.com" one ?
