I think there are a large number of reasons for poor turnout: 1) Many companies have moved their locations from heavy 'center city' locations to more rural. This increases travel time to any central location for meeting locations. 2) Catch-22. If there were still tremendous turnout at the meetings themselves (like in the mid eighties through the nineties) more people would see benefit to going and interacting with many fellow i5ers. The less people that show up, the less appeal for that important interactive aspect of a meeting. 3) Increased value of personal time. More people want to relax with their families after a long day at work as opposed to more work related activities. This might lend itself to less meetings per year attracting more membership or more of an online presence. 4) Decreasing membership due to platform switching. I just hope this is not the major reason! My 2 cents. There are several LUGs in major metro areas that have VERY HIGH calibre speakers and are getting very poor showings. To say it's just a speaker issue is not correct in any way. And yes, the web based is making inroads and perhaps that's part of the wave of the future... Don in DC At 04:54 PM 10/30/2006 -0600, you wrote:
PHUN400 is officially closing due to lack of membership attendance and
the
ability to get good speakers - according to the outgoing chairman. I wonder if the lack of good speakers could be addressed by going the
online
meeting route?
