In the Unix world, leading 0's indicate the wonderfully intuitive octal
notation.  This includes programming languages such as C.  Can't remember if
Java inherited this affliction as well.

It makes a difference, for sure. Here's what I tried on the PC command
prompt:

Ping 10.10.11.1

Reply from 10.10.11.1

Then...

Ping 010.010.011.001

Reply from 8.8.9.1
