Centerfield offers pair of tools that sit on top of IBM's database monitor,
insure/INDEX and insure/ANALYSIS. Pretty user friendly and to the point.

As for IBM's toolset, there is a Query Optimization class IBM offers that
would help you get going with Visual Explain and iNav's SQL Performance
Monitors (aka database monitor). I believe they have some labs online as
well.
You really have to have an idea how query optimizer works before you can
effectively use these tools though, and that's where the class helps. I
took it and think it's good starting point.
Following the class, there are redbooks and whitebooks that can help:

- SQL Performance Diagnosis
- DB2 Universal Database for iSeries Database Performance and Query
Optimization
- Preparing for and Tuning the SQL Query Engine on DB2 Universal Database
for iSeries
- Modernizing iSeries Application Data Access - a Roadmap Cornerstone

Subject: Visual Explain - Gasp!

Geez...I thought I would check out Visual Explain since one of the
developers wrote this code that is so much sweeter using SQL than with a
jillion logicals, but it runs pretty darn slow. I don't know anything about
the SQL performance monitors, but I figured what the heck...I'll figure it
out.

That's some complex stuff. Looks like there's more information than one
could ever need. Is there a short cut to this stuff, or does one need to
become a binary tree hugger to get use out of it?
