If IBM were to take your suggestion, and develop their own proprietary client, 
how well would it compete against Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Macromedia 
Flash, to name just three alternatives?

You're not alone in this Aaron, and I would agree that most browser based 
interfaces are less productive than 5250 when it comes to data entry and 
maintenance, but I think I could change your mind with a brief demo of a model 
I developed for database inquiry and maintenance, using just HTML, CSS, 
JavaScript, and RPG.  Send me a private email if you'd be interested in
