Help me out here folks... This is a 9406-570 0934 7757.  I can't find a
thing about V5R3M5 on this box, nor can I find any requirement that I
need it unless I'm trying to do load source off external DASD, which I'm
not.

As other have said, yes you need v5r3m5........Or you can upgrade to
v5r4 before the upgrade
