I've found that using the *HIGH compression available with the DTACPR 
parameter with V5R4 is quite impressive.  The amount of space saved by 
ftping that to a PC and then running winzip on that was negligible.  Not 
like DTACPR(*yes), that didn't get near the compression.

But methinks you are right with PKZIP.  See also tar in qshell.
