How about just swapping the expansion side? Would it be possible to
move the disk drives to the newer expansion cabinet and attach that to
the older processor? You will not be able to move the SPD cards to the
newer expansion cabinet so all you can do if move the disks. You
software is licensed to the Serial number and Processor. Changing the
Processor or Serial number will cause you problems.

Let's say I have two model 720s. Let's say one is newer and one is
older, meaning the expansion side on the old one has SPD in it. And
then let's say that the newer one (if 2001 is newer) is being
decomissioned. Let's also assume that neither of these machines are on
hardware maintenance.

If I wanted to move the older system's guts (disks and control panel) to
the new one, would this migrate the serial as well? I've always heard
that the serial is stored in the control panel. Basically I want to get
rid of the SPD buses and get on a few year's newer hardware. And since
there is software on the system which is serial number dependent, and
since none of this software has support anymore, I need to basically do
a roll-your-own upgrade. Both systems are the same P level.

Thoughts?
