We use MMAIL, from the good people at EASY400

You can use it as is, or use the provided API to roll your own.

We did a spool file to pdf MIME attachment proof of concept (custom) in
less than 4 hours.
We also use it to email data base files in comma delimited format.

It comes with the source code (so you can look at all those beautiful
GOTOs :)
