I think you are missing the two main points:
1. It's just *FUNNY* that the *reason* given for not allowing an update --
an update designed to fix a date/time problem -- is that the date and time
are not in synch.
2. One of the first principles of both medicine and support is, or ought to
be, "At least do no harm." We were hit with a deluge of Win2K patches in
the days preceding the new DST, many of which knocked one or more users
right out of productivity, in a few cases for hours at a time. The
justification we got from Microsoft was that this was necessary to prepare
for Y2Klock, which was false information -- probably from a low level
employee who was being overwhelmed by calls related to all the updates
being pushed out. Regardless of all that, we would simply have been better
off if we had disconnected Win2K updates *completely*. The security bugs
being fixed were almost certainly less likely to affect us negatively than
the mess we ended up with.
What if a PTF IBM pushed out for an OS version under hardware support,
only, caused significant problems with software? Think a few messages might
get posted on this list [grin]?

Hi again,
Microsoft is still offering security updates for Windows 2000, per the
lifetime published by Microsoft.
The problem is that you are using an Operating System without the proper
support agreements - IBM is doing this exactly the same (You can only
get CUMPTF-Packages when you have a HW-Maintenance Contract, single PTFs
or PTF groups require a SW-Maintenance Contract).
It's just my opinion that you shouldn't put blame on thing where your
company didn't plan things right.

updates to Win2K, even though it has passed its first "end of life".
Some
of these updates did more damage to our Windows network, in conjunction
with the Daylight Time change, than pure neglect would have done.
We do have the solution in hand. Implementing it is a pain in the
posterior
-- because it's after the fact, and because it has to be prioritized on
the
"squeaky wheel" principle.
