I would look at Data, Text to Columns in the Excel spreadsheet

If that does not work I would move the column out past the end of the other columns in the spreadsheet and look at putting in its place one that uses an If statement to put something you can use in the column.

If that does not work what type of field is it in Excel and what type are you trying to put it into, or are you trying to just create the file on the system i from the spreadsheet.
