I think you may have better luck on the web400 list.  However ../ does not 
say start at the root.  Those two leading dot dots mean start in the 
directory preceding this directory.  For example if your directory 
structure looks like
mywebserver
mywebserver/html
mywebserver/pdf
and a link in a html file in your html directory says
../pdf/myfile.pdf
then it goes back up one directory to webserver, then drills down the pdf 
directory into the myfile.pdf file.  Understand?  I'm a babe in the woods 
on this web stuff but that's pretty much the directory structure I 
inherited while maintaining my LUG website.
