I'd shutdown the UPS, just so the alarm isn't going off all the time. If 
there is no load on the UPS, the batteries should hold their charge for an 
extended period of time.

You'd have to add up the load on the UPS and the reserve power in the 
batteries to answer this.

The UPS should act as a power conditioner, and smooth out the voltage from 
the generator, but don't cheap out on the generator or there is the 
possibility of damaging the UPS. Be sure the generator is supposed to be 
putting out a sine wave or at least a modified sine wave.
