Does one still need to have a 7000 RPM disk drive to run WDSC at a
reasonable speed?

WDSC is slow to start up. In pre lap top days I would start it on Monday
and shut it down on Fridays. Now that I am required to take my lap top
home at night (DR requirement) I start it daily.

However start up time should not be part of the picture, any more than one
would buy a PC over an iSeries just because the PC reboots faster.

Sounds like you're the manager. Try this.
Upgrade everyone to a kick butt PC. Maybe even nice laptops.
Schedule Jon Paris and/or Susan Gantner to come on site for a few days for
WDSC training.
Hike the laptops into your conference/training room.
While they are there, delete the command STRSEU. Otherwise all the above
is money down the pisser to the SEU Neanderthals.
We did all the above except the deletion of the command. Result was that
no one wanted to put up with a ramp up curve and very few switched. Second
generation programmers are eating it up.
