"All modern programming techniques - other than RPG - require you to open and close your files."

Lets see, 'modern' languages require me to code minutia that RPG handles for me automatically. Seems to me that by relieving me of these tasks RPG would be considered the 'modern' language.

Same thing for level breaks. For those of us unlucky enough not to have the cool web, GUI, etc. based tools mentioned in other posts why would I want to write level break code into my report program when it is an inherent part of the language?

For the record, I write very few cycle programs these days but I don't believe it should be thrown out just because it wasn't added to the language within the last 10 years.

Booth,

All modern programming techniques - other than RPG - require you to open and close your files. We got lucky, but it means we have to learn new programming techniques when we move to a new language or a new platform. For you, who will retire in RPG-land, there is no need to worry!

Why do you even care when/how they open & close?
