Yes. Just define a couple of data structures derived from the file, and overlaid on the before and after images provided. Then examine your field in those structures, and do a "quick-out" if the field you're looking at hasn't changed.

The thing to remember about writing triggers that only need to take action under certain conditions is to check those conditions first, as quickly and efficiently as possible. If there isn't anything to do, they should exit immediately; if there is something to do, they should do it as quickly and efficiently as possible.
