If you upgrade to the new version of HMC software (you must be on 6.1.2 to
upgrade, also check your FSP code as well before upgrading) you can access
your HMC remotely with httpS://hmcaddress . Its simple, its quick, and it is
a great user interface. The HMC has so many advantages over any other
console, but yes it is the most expensive choice. We have upgraded almost
every customer to this latest release of the HMC.

We have taken our choice, and are in the process of paying our money.
What's this about browser access to the HMC, i.e. without Web SM? A link
to the appropriate IBM document(s) would be more than sufficient, and
gratefully received.

For the cheapest HMC purchase a desktop or desk-side unit and use you
own monitor or KVM. Both are under $1900 though that still doesn't
qualify as 'cheap' It does everything I want a console to do and the
newest software version allows you to access it from a simple browser
(no more WEBSM).
So as usual you pay your money and take your choice.
