That (and what you described in your previous message) is in large part 
a function of the UPS manufacturer (and possibly the product line). The 
experiences I described were in connection with the APC SmartUPS product 
line. When it did a scheduled self-test on a battery nearing its end of 
service life, it was able to transfer service back to the line, but by 
then, it had already initiated the emergency shutdown.

On at least one other occasion, it (without any advance warning that the 
battery was even starting to go) tried to self-test, and the battery 
didn't last long enough to transfer power back to the utility.

After having more shutdowns caused by APC UPSs than averted by them, we 
switched to PowerWare.
