Good catch on the NY Times article, Raul. Thin client computing is something I've been trying to follow the past couple years. I'd be interested in reading an article from anyone using them.

The folks at http://olpc.com/pictures.html seem to have a really interesting laptop designed for children and schools. There's no hard drive. Programs can be installed onto internal flashcard memory similar to digital camera memory, or run from a USB thumb drive, or accessed over the Internet via Firefox and wireless network access. The OS is a small-footprint version on Linux.
