Thank you for your thorough explanation. It didn't dawn on me that the
options that I suggested did not preclude writing records. Therefore
initial population (and subsequent additional population) is possible.
This makes these options extremely valuable for log files. Granted, if
you want to purge historical records you have to rename, create, copy the
data and delete the renamed file (sounds like old tape file days). For a
"snapshot in time" your DCR on CHGPF turning off write makes sense also.
