That would require the *SPENDMONEY command

Either shipping it

or buying higher capacity used/refurbished disks for an antiquated machine

And to answer your question
Yes.....if be fine with losing contents of outqs and DTAQs

Its our "disaster recovery" machine

The users have been trained to not expect outq contents to be available anway in the event of a disaster recovery situation

And we don't rely on DTAQs for any meaningful purpose that we couldn't just recreate

Jim,

First you need to do at least 2 full system backups (GO SAVE 21) and
MAKE SURE everything is saved. Because I think you are going to need "Belts
and Suspenders" with your plan.

Remember, just because it's a full system save, you won't get things
like Spool files and contents of *DTAQs. Do you really wish to reload?
It's a pretty easy process to move a load source drive, you just have to
have some familiarity with DST and work with Disk Units.

I have done this with systems at 88% full, we just ended Raid on all
the disks, that gave us some free space, and then removed a drive from the
ASP, now I can put a higher density drive into that slot, and copy my load
source, then pull out the old load source, move the drive we just copied
into position 1, and put another drive into the now empty slot. Add new
drive to ASP, and then remove other old drives from ASP, remove them from
machine, insert new high density drives into their slots, start RAID-5 on
the entire set, and add everything to ASP, and you are done with load source
migration. By the way, you need to bring machine down between most of the
steps above.

Next you need to Increase the size of the LIC area at V5R2 before
upgrading to V5R4. You can't use the process in GO LICPGM, you need to call
the API QLPALCSP to increase the Lic size. Have you loaded the Preparation
PTFs?

You know, it might just be easier to put the 270 in a box, ship it
to Danbury CT, and we will send it back done.

By the way, remember there is a difference when doing a D-mode IPL
on an Install if you use your SAVSYS or you use the distribution CDs with
your DST passwords.

Best of Luck.

Pete

So here's my wild theory:

Since this is virgin territory for me...I may be way off base
So any/all flames are appreciated :)

1) Save system using Option #21 (or better to do a savstg)

2) Do a "D" Manual IPL and reload the LIC from Tape or CD and do an
initialize of the disks.

3) Move said disks around so that the 35GB disk is in "1" (a.k.a. Load
source)

4) Restore from tape

5) Do upgrade from v5R2 to v5r4

/flame retardant suit on

Couple of points.

1. as stated before you need a 17gb or larger load source for v5r4
yours is an 8gb drive(1)

b. You can get to a larger load source(35gb) if you save/restore the
system and move the drives around. Since you have three empty slots
maybe you add some more 35gb drives.

Hi all,

We have a little 270 box that is our test/disaster recovery machine
in
a
completely different office. It has V5R2 on it currently.

We want to up it to V5R4 (which is the last OS it can handle per IBM)

BIG gotcha:

V5R4 requires 17GB disks or better. Smaller model 270s have 8.5GB
drives.
