Just a correction, SPLTOOL is $499, not the entire Suite (which is SPLTOOL,
AFPTOOL and MAILTOOL, that is $1299).

In five years a LOT has been added to these tools. Mainly from user input.

Check out Easy400's MMAIL (www.easy400.net). It is free,
open source and really, really easy to use. I'm a big fan
of it since its beginnings (and yes, I'm old enough to
recognize "nifty" although, as you said, I hadn't heard it
in a long time).

for emailing spooled output directly from within a CL.
When the user runs a
job, the output genereated from the job is converted to
PDF (or something)
