Resistance is futile. The general rule is pretty much that if your tape
drive qualifies as an external tape drive (according to IBM maintenance)
then it can be an alternate installation device, but, not an alternate IPL
device.
Done carefully, (as you seem to do), then it's not really that big of an
issue, unless of course you do not have copies of your installation CD
offsite with your offsite tapes. I normally have multiple copies of i5/os
laying around. Also, make sure that your offsite base CD is a somewhat
current respin. Some of the latest and greatest models may have issues
with original I Base CD's.
