John,
When you do that, don't you lose all the DST/SST user-ids?

That's definitely nice about the HMC - being able to change the alt IPL
quickly and easily - but don't count on it 100%. If you're using a tapedrive
that happens to be part of a library then it's ability to be an alt IPLdevice
becomes a "maybe". It may work. Or not. On our SCSI 3582 the answerturns
out to be not.device
For me I've given up on that and will use the LIC CD to get started & then
restore the OS from tape.

Perhaps another reason for an HMC :) You specify the alternative IPL
on the HMC, and you can tell it an IOP or an IOA, and it has always foundit.

I haven't had a problem on a stand-along system doing a D-mode IPL from
I_BASE cd, and then bringing up DST and setting my AlternativeInstallation
Device (close names don't get it mixed up), and using 3580s, 3570s, or3590s
to continue the load from my SAVSYS Tape.Alt

I will give up then. ;)
I think I do remember reading something about the 3580s either not being
supported as Alt IPL or needing some specific setup in order to be used as
IPL. No big deal to use the disc first (have had to do many times), wasjust
wondering I was missing something!drive

Resistance is futile. The general rule is pretty much that if your tape
qualifies as an external tape drive (according to IBM maintenance) then itcan
be an alternate installation device, but, not an alternate IPL device.offsite
Done carefully, (as you seem to do), then it's not really that big of an
issue, unless of course you do not have copies of your installation CD
with your offsite tapes. I normally have multiple copies of i5/os layingoriginal
around. Also, make sure that your offsite base CD is a somewhat current
respin. Some of the latest and greatest models may have issues with
I Base CD's.right?

Alt IPL Device (tape)
I've struggled with this one on just about every migration i've done, and
usually just give up and 'D' IPL to the I_BASE_01 CD and then install from
the Alt Install device from that point forward. On this new 525, even
though i've selected the IOP that the 3580 tape drive is on, it just keeps
cycling through a number of 20031FFF SRC codes and then finally fails. It
seems to be a question of which slot is used for the tape controller,
to
Does anyone usually hassle through this, or just take the route of IPLing
the CD and then defining an Alt Install device for the tape and continuingthe
install from there? Is there any reason to not IPL from the CD if you'relist To
doing the LIC and OS install from tape? (haven't seen any ill
effects)
