You're worried about resources and the "half-life of information" but you
consider a complex custom protocol like Lukas's better than something you
can pick up a book about at Barnes & Noble?

I would consider the supposed complexity of Lukas's framework relatively
insignificant to adopting an entirely new language and platform for business
logic processing (i.e. .NET)

No offense to Lukas, I'm sure his solution works fine, but you're never
going to find someone that knows it already, so I find it hard to call it
"better" in the context of complexity, and resources.

I would like to play my "everybody does it different" card here. Whenever
you hire somebody, you need to train them as to how your shop does things as
it relates to programming practices. Will Lukas's method take an extra
week/month of training? Most likely. That is such a small price to pay
when, again, compared to introducing a new language and platform to
maintain.

Walden, do you not see the huge benefit of retaining and maximizing ones
investment in the iSeries with Lukas's approach? Some of this might be
circumstantial, but I would say that Lukas's approach is a much better
solution for a strictly RPG shop to get GUI. If you already have a lot of
.NET (a lot meaning at least 1/3 of all business related development) then
maybe your approaches are more warranted, or become less dangerous because
your company has already invested in those technologies.

Or maybe in
some cases they didn't even know a better option was possible like
Lukas
Beeler's company approach to modernization.
