Not necessarily....

For instance, if there's a one-to-one match between records in the joined files, then it's pretty easy
for the DBMS to allow updates through the view.

IIRC, both Oracle and MS SQL server allow such updates without resorting to instead of triggers.

I'm actually kind of surprised that DB2 doesn't.
