Ron - there are maybe 3 kinds of alternatives, basically

1. IBM's Data Integrator - uses a middleware PC - allows for standard SQL, embedded or whatever - expensive
2. Our RPG2SQL product - also uses a middleware PC - uses function calls like SQL call-level interface - no embedded SQL - not too expensive ;-)
3. JDBC - contract someone, as Rob did, or get down to learning a lot - There's an article by Kent Milligan of IBM that speaks to this - look for the works heterogeneous and database in the same title in google - site:ibm.com
