My mistake: I put a finger on the faulty drive frame while it was 
beeping; the beep WAS coming from the drive (or SOMETHING on the drive 
frame).

Why a failed hard drive would make a sound like an oboe being slowly 
strangled, though . . .

And if the sound wasn't engineered specifically to be annoying, IBM 
couldn't have done a better job of it if they had.

At any rate, I still needed to drop down to DST in order to pull the 
pair out of the configuration: no way am I going to waste a spare on a 
mostly-empty ASP!
