Jim:

I'm not at all certain I understand. If you're wanting to scan based on 
fields in a record format, you could perhaps combine two elements.

First, declare a DS with LIKEREC() so that you have a known area to work 
with. Read the record into the DS.

And second, use the List Fields (QUSLFLD) API to get a list of the 
fields along with buffer offsets.

Now, send the field name into your program. Find it in the list of 
fields. Use the buffer offset and length to determine what sub-string of 
the DS to look at.

I'm not sure what other kind of field name you'd be interested in.
