Thanks to all who replied.
I had to make the following changes to get it to work. I wasn't seeing the 
change because my interactive session held the original settings in cache. 
After logging out/logging in I was able to ping other servers on our LAN by 
the unqualified server name.
                       Change TCP/IP Domain (CHGTCPDMN)
Type choices, press Enter.
Host name  . . . . . . . . . . . HOSTNAME       *NONE
Domain name  . . . . . . . . . . DMNNAME        *NONE
Domain search list . . . . . . . DMNSCHLIST     'CCINTDOMAIN.LOCAL'
Host name search priority  . . . HOSTSCHPTY     *LOCAL
Domain name server:              INTNETADR
  Internet address . . . . . . .                '192.168.1.22'
