Forgive my ignorance...but how would you host a video surveillance system on
a text-based system that has no GUI?

At best you would get a java front end on it, which would be unbearably
slow, and you'd still need a PC or MAC to run it on, and on the other end,
you'd have to go with an xServer or a stand-a-lone windows system that did
all the GUI work and handled the DirectX (assuming Windows) calls for
interfacing with the cameras and displaying the images. The only thing the
iSeries would get you for something like this is the ability to store
information about the images captured or video stored in a secure database.

I make a living from the iSeries but I would not recommend it to a client
for solutions where it was not suited.

I don't know about Erik's reasons, But if I needed a surveliance system
I will surely prefer to have it hosted in the iSeries.
Sadly, anybody who is selling windos-only solutions will try to convince
everybody that it is not a good idea to use a better server.

We are in this business, (security camera systems, card access, etc) and
also do a lot of iSeries work as well, but would never consider the iSeries
as the server for this type of project. Why do you want an iSeries
solution?

Do you know of any System i - hosted Surveillance Video and Security
Cameras
systems?

Or is that an application that has never ported to the System i?

Need to review some of the available offerings for outdoor-mounted security
cameras and surveillance video that store data on disk.
Here is one site http://www.surveillance-video.com/
