I am not familiar with MTA??

MTA = Mail Transport Agent. Basically, the "email server" is an MTA, while the "email client" (KMail, pine, Notes, Outlook, etc.) is called an Mail User Agent (MUA).

It's a lot easier than typing 'SMTP server' all the time. Not only that, but the term server is used both for software and hardware, so it can be confusing at times. MTA always refers to the software.
