I would imagine that this is the reason IBM choose DVD-RAM:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-RAM

"DVD-RAM is considered a highly reliable format, as the discs have built-in error control and a defect
management system. Therefore, DVD-RAM is perceived to be better than the other DVD technologies for
traditional computer usage tasks such as general data storage, backup and archival, though the Mt.
Rainier standard for DVD+RW somewhat lessens the DVD-RAM format's perceived advantage."

In the North East, DVD-RAMs are impossible to buy at retail. They can
only
be ordered. As I refuse to put a credit card number in the Internet, this
is difficult. Somebody at IBM needed to make a better choice, but this
likely could be said about every phase of the HMC, unfortunately.

I've found them at best buy and other electronic stores.

There's more demand for DVD-RAM from a/v as opposed to IT.

The only media that works in the optical drives of the HMC for writing
is
DVD-RAM.

I've had the best luck calling and ordering them from office supply
stores
-
most don't list them on their websites or stock them due to the lack of
demand, I'd imagine. They're pretty specialized media.

Thanks Justin this helped a lot. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have
the
proper DVD*R and can't get the drive to format any of them. So, I'm
FTPing the back up.
What exact DVD*R do I need?

Click on Management Environment -> yourhmcname -> Licensed Internal

"Format

I'm attempting to upgrade our HMC from V5.2 to V6.0 and I'm stuck on
the

I'm using info center instructions titled "Upgrading the machine
code
on an
HMC" and I'm on step 4, "Back up critical console information or
HMC
Data".

This says to Select "Format Removable Media" after inserting the
media
in
the drive. From where am I supposed to select it? There's nothing
popping
up and it's not a menu option on the HMC.

Now if I chose to forget DVD-R and backup to a USB drive, the
instructions
say to select Service Management in the Navigation Pane and then
choose
Format... Well, my HMC has no Service Management option. It does
have
a
Server Management option, but there are no Format options within it.

What am I missing here?
