And to take my premise of "nothing wrong with old names, so long as what
they refer to isn't changed completely beyond recognition," consider one
of the world's most popular automobiles: the Toyota Camry. Toyota has
been using that model name for vehicles of roughly the same size and
appearance for twenty seven years. Nobody's going to mistake a 2008
Camry for a 1980 "Celica Camry," but they're going to see a family
resemblance, and they're bloody well supposed to see one.
If IBM had been serious about a name change as an image improvement,
they would have come up with something a lot catchier, and a lot easier
to GOOGLE on, and they would have stuck with it.
