That is a 512 byte character field, not a varying length character field.
It just happens to contain several blanks at the end. I probably would
have made any field that was that many character bytes a varying length
field.
However, since the design is already there I am going to assume that you
do not want to count any trailing blanks. If so, then you need to combine
a trim command along with character_length. See also: LTRIM, RTRIM, TRIM
