Sharepoint, for as much as I have used it, is a nice product. The main
thing I have used it for is to give groups of people (possibly from
different companies) a common location to share documents, task lists, bug
tracking, software feature tracking and things of that nature.

Probably my favorite feature that works quite excellent is the absolutely
seamless integration with Office (When using Internet Explorer). For
example, you can click on a document in the Sharepoint web page and it will
automatically open up in the appropriate Office product. When you save it,
it saves directly to the Sharepoint server (i.e. you didn't have to download
it, save it to your PC, and then re-upload it). I haven't found another CMS
that does that (though I haven't been looking for awhile).

I would like to hear if anybody has seen the equivalent from IBM? I hear
about Websphere + Portal in the same phrase here and there, but am never
sure if they are referring to a product similar to Sharepoint or a framework
for building portals.

Joe Pluta,
Anyone an advocate of Sharepoint?

Microsoft technologies for global IT made me rethink some of my earlier
opinions about the future of mainframes. Just last month in these pages
I spoke somewhat disparagingly about the future of mainframe technology
