We used to use Operations Console in our pre HMC days. We had no problems
with that. Even through OS upgrades of both the iSeries and the PC
running Op's Console.

You could use PC Anywhere or any of the tools of that genre. Nowadays, I
would be using Dameware. However, for remote access the HMC, with V7 or
higher of HMC code, is hard to beat.

We still have twinax on one lpar of our 570-MMA. However we wouldn't
dream of using it for the console. With the unreliability of twinax, and
with the scary thought of trying to switch that crud over during a Mimix
failover we don't allow it to leave the room. If we needed a card slot,
or upgraded to some hardware and IBM said they were dropping twinax, we
wouldn't shed a tear.
