Another good idea! I'm getting ready to put a couple of PC's into
semi-retirement. This would be a good way to learn this stuff in order to be
able to at least talk about it with clients.

Keep in mind that to run a 2003 server you pretty much need a somewhat
dedicated box (but the requirements aren't that beefy). We've got one
hosting our website (in the basement) running on a Pentium3, 1.2Ghz with
1.5 gb of ram. Not the fastest in the world but it works. Also, you'll
need server antivirus software too, which we bought a two year
subscription to the AVG server version. We got the 2003 software from a
friend who was taking MCSE classes and he got the software via his classes
(he never used it).
I've got another old desktop in the basement and this summer I want to
load it with a version of Ubuntu server (linux). The Ubuntu client is
pretty cool since you can download it, burn it to a CD and boot from the
CD to test drive it without loading anything to your hard drive. It's a
good intro to linux and then if you want you can move toward the LAMP
(linux, apache, mysql, php), which might be an alternative since all of
those components in one flavor or another may run on i5os.
