IBM's tech support team in Rochester is a good resource for this kind of
question, if your tape drive is on maintenance. IBM guys really know
the 3581.

The recommendations you received from others will probably solve your
problem, but I would be happy to talk you through our 3581 tape drive
configuration.

We configured ours to load slots 1 through 8 and then stop, and not
begin again at slot 1.
