Yes... that should work just fine. Of course, you'll need to run PC software (such as iSeries Access printer emulation) to get it connected to the System i, but it should definitely work.

The network printer is nicer in that you don't need a PC to be involved, you don't have to worry about someone trying to print to it while the PC is shut off, etc... but the one that's connected via the PC will work just fine, as long as it's not host-based.
