hmm...I've never seen that happen with transitions between XP and
OS/X, but YMMV.

Actually, they do. Although for all intents and purposes, Lose95 is just
DOS with a protected-mode skin veneered over it.

But more to the point, I've seen WinDoze long filenames turn into
generated 8.3 names on MacOS, and (I think) Linux as well. To be fair,
I've also seen it happen on DOS-formatted media when going across the
MacOS 9/X transition.
