In case anyone is still wondering, contrary to what the manuals say the 
270 never realizes it has a new disk drive until you rebuild the RAID 
set. It keeps reporting the disk unit as failed and tells you the old 
serial number.  I know, I tried everything including DST.  But, then you 
simply do a rebuild and once the rebuild is done, the disk unit has the 
new serial number.

It's magic.
