If you have a large network there might be some access control lists in your network switches that allow or deny access by IP. If you have a firewall with conduits setup to allow external traffic those are IP addresses.

how confident are you that the network your system exists in is only
referenced by name? Firewalls? ftp processing (internal and outside),
vpn access. It's so cute when the network techs say "oops...".
We recently moved a system to an outside data center - new ip...
They said "oops" a lot.
